FARM SOLAR PV
Solar Panels for Farms in Ireland
Solar PV systems designed around the electricity demands of Irish farms. Laltec installs agricultural solar panels for dairy farms, sheds, workshops and other farm premises across Ireland.
AGRICULTURAL SOLAR PV
Generate Electricity on Your Farm
Farms can use significant amounts of electricity throughout the day for milking, cooling, pumps, ventilation, lighting, workshops and other equipment.
Solar PV allows your farm to generate electricity on site. When properly sized, the system can supply part of your daytime electricity demand and reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid.
Laltec plans farm Solar PV systems around the property, available roof space, electrical supply and how electricity is actually used on the farm.
Solar Panels for Different Types of Farms
Agricultural Solar PV can be planned around the electricity demand, buildings and operating requirements of different farms.
Dairy Farms
Solar PV can help supply daytime electricity used for milking equipment, milk cooling, water heating, pumps and other electrical loads.
Poultry & Pig Farms
Ventilation, feeding systems, lighting and other equipment can create regular electricity demand throughout the day.
Tillage & Grain Farms
Solar electricity can contribute towards power used by storage facilities, workshops, handling equipment and other farm operations.
Beef & Mixed Farms
Farm buildings, pumps, lighting, workshops and other electrical equipment can all form part of the farm's electricity demand.
Agricultural Sheds & Workshops
Suitable shed and workshop roofs can provide useful space for Solar PV installations while generating electricity close to where it is used.

Why Consider Solar Panels for Your Farm?
Solar generation happens during daylight hours. Therefore, farms with regular daytime electricity use can often consume a useful proportion of the electricity produced directly on site.
Farm buildings can also provide substantial roof space for solar panels. However, the right system size depends on more than the amount of roof available.
- Generate electricity on your own farm
- Reduce reliance on electricity bought from the grid
- Use suitable shed and building roof space
- Plan the system around actual farm electricity demand
- Add battery storage where it suits the project
- Integrate Solar PV with existing farm electrical infrastructure
SOLAR & AGRICULTURAL ELECTRICAL
Farm Solar PV Needs the Right Electrical Infrastructure
A farm Solar PV installation is not just about fitting panels to a roof.
The existing electrical supply, distribution boards, three phase equipment and connection requirements can all affect how a system should be designed.
Laltec combines Solar PV installation with agricultural electrical experience. Where necessary, we can identify electrical work that should form part of the wider project.
FARM SOLAR GRANTS
Grants for Agricultural Solar PV
Grant support may be available for eligible farm Solar PV projects.
The TAMS 3 Solar Capital Investment Scheme currently provides 60% grant aid with a separate €90,000 investment ceiling for eligible solar investments. The scheme supports renewable self-consumption on farms and currently covers Solar PV investments up to 62kW.
Farms are also included within SEAI’s Non-Domestic Microgen Grant, which supports eligible Solar PV capacity up to 1000kWp. Which route is appropriate depends on the project and grant rules.
Grant schemes and eligibility requirements can change. Always confirm the current scheme rules before starting grant-funded work.
FARM SOLAR INSTALLERS
Why Choose Laltec for Farm Solar PV?
Farm Solar PV needs to work with the electrical setup and day-to-day operation of the farm, not just the available roof space.
Laltec combines Solar PV installation with agricultural electrical experience. We can assess the property, plan the system around electricity demand and identify any electrical upgrades that may be needed before installation.
From smaller farm buildings to larger agricultural premises, we provide practical Solar PV solutions designed around the farm and its existing electrical infrastructure.

Farm Solar Panels FAQs
Common questions about Solar PV for farms, agricultural buildings, three phase electricity, grants and installation.
Are solar panels suitable for farms in Ireland?
Yes. Solar PV can suit farms with suitable installation space and regular electricity demand.
The system should be planned around how and when electricity is used on the farm rather than simply filling all available roof space with panels.
How many solar panels does my farm need?
There is no single system size that suits every farm. First, we consider electricity consumption, daytime demand, available roof or installation space and the existing electrical supply.
From there, the Solar PV system can be planned around the requirements of the farm.
Can solar panels be installed on farm sheds?
Yes. Suitable agricultural sheds can provide substantial roof space for a farm Solar PV installation.
However, the building, roof area and proposed panel location should be assessed before the final system is planned.
Can Solar PV work with a three phase farm supply?
Yes. Many farms use three phase electricity for machinery, pumps, milking equipment and other larger electrical loads.
The Solar PV system should therefore be planned around the existing electrical installation. Laltec also provides agricultural electrical services where upgrades or additional electrical work are required.
Can solar electricity be used for milking and cooling equipment?
Solar-generated electricity can contribute towards electrical equipment operating while the Solar PV system is generating.
For example, this may include milking equipment, milk cooling, pumps, lighting and other farm loads. The amount used directly depends on the farm's electricity profile and the size of the system.
Farm Solar Grants, Batteries & Installation
Is there a TAMS solar grant for farms?
Yes. Eligible agricultural Solar PV projects may qualify for support through the TAMS Solar Capital Investment Scheme.
Scheme rules, grant levels and eligibility can change. Therefore, check the current requirements before starting work. See our Solar Grants Ireland guide for more information.
Can farms apply for the SEAI Non-Domestic solar grant?
The agricultural sector can also fall within the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant scheme.
However, the correct grant route depends on the project and current scheme rules. For this reason, establish the appropriate grant route before installation begins.
You can read more on our solar grant information page .
Can battery storage be added to a farm Solar PV system?
Yes. Battery storage can be included where it suits the farm's electricity use and the wider Solar PV system.
A battery can store some excess solar electricity for use later. However, battery storage is not necessary for every farm project. The decision should be based on how the farm uses electricity.
Do farm Solar PV systems need an ESB Networks application?
The connection process depends on the Solar PV system and its generation and export capacity.
Different connection routes can apply to different system sizes. Therefore, the network connection requirements should be considered while the farm Solar PV system is being planned.
